Laurence
Laurence hauled the fence back into place and hopped up into the cab of the truck. Once he reversed it out onto the road, he paused there to look up at the seemingly vacant lot. âHowâs it done?â
Amy sighed. âNot a spell I know. Occultation was Paulaâs specialty. Rufusâ mom,â she clarified. âIâm sure the spellâs in the library somewhere.â
He nodded to her. âThanks for all your help. I know I got in touch out of the blue and you didnât have to help me.â
âOh, thereâs no telling what trouble youâd get into if I didnât.â She frowned at him. âBut I donât want Rufus hurt.â
âI totally understand.â His phone buzzed, but he ignored it.
So it buzzed several more times.
âUh, excuse me. I think Iâve got some missed calls or something.â He wriggled in his seat so he could get the new phone out of his pocket.
âCalls, texts, emails.â Amy looked apologetic. âThatâs the problem with being cut off from this plane. No signal.â
âShit.â He scrolled through his alerts. Emails, tweets, nothing important there. Two missed calls from his mom, that was more serious. Then one from Quentin, who didnât even know Laurence had a working phone right now so why the hell was he calling?
He swallowed quickly. How could he think like that? Quentin called him!
âDo you mind if I-â
âGo ahead, honey.â She nodded.
âThanks.â He hit the voicemail button and listened to all three messages.
âBambi, I thought you might like to know that Neil Storm is here. Bright blessings, dear.â
He exhaled with relief. If thatâs all it was, the world hadnât ended.
âBambi, Neil and Quentin have gone to Altitude. Maria asked me to pass that on to you, as sheâs had to leave to collect her children. Take care.â
âShit.â He started the engine and propped the phone between ear and shoulder as he began to drive.
âProblem?â Amy buckled her seatbelt.
âMaybe.â
Why the hell had Quentin gone to a bar? Goddess, if heâd been drinking since that message was left heâd be totally shit-faced by now. He fixed his eyes on the road and waited for the third message to play.
âHey, Laurence!â It was Neilâs voice this time. âI know this callâs from Banburyâs number, but - haha youâre gonna love this - he says you hate him and never wanna see him again. He might be a tiny bit drunk, but I thought the very least you could do was tell him to stop being a fucking idiot, am I right? Anyway, weâre at Altitude if you wanna come get your lovesick boyfriend. Snoochie boochies!â
âShit!â He threw his phone into the cup holder between the seats and hit the accelerator.
Amy gripped the sides of her seat. âWhatâs wrong?â
Where could he even start with that? I ignored my lover all day and now heâs out getting drunk with a rock star. Or possibly oh did I mention heâs a raging alcoholic? Maybe he could go with He needs me, and Iâm an hour away.
In the end all he said was, âI gotta get home.
